Those Dirty Mats!
Posted September 6, 2010 by funkydes in Nonsense
I was wondering why there was a small team of cleaners scrubbing the footmats at the entrance to Glasgow Central Station yesterday all afternoon. They closed the gates, lifted the mats, used toothbrushes in-between all the gaps - I don't think I've ever seen so much attention being paid to cleaning the crud around that part of the station.

Then, today in the 6 o'clock news... all became clear. Prince Charles was in town to give a wee speech at the station. Let's hope he comes more often and the streets will be sparkling!

Did you know NHS Tayside are looking for a homeopathic doctor - for £60k a year!?

Here's the advert: http://snipurl.com/10p7gt

And apparently, they "value People, Health & Quality"!!!

If in any doubt, find out the facts about mumbo jumbo here: http://www.1023.org.uk/ or check out the Twitter hashtag #ten23

Perseid Meteor Shower - Update
Posted August 13, 2010 by funkydes in Astronomy
Awesome! In the space of 1hour at Glentrool in Galloway Forest Park, the UK's 1st Dark Sky Park, we saw 15 meteors of varying degrees of stunning-ness overnight Thursday into Friday Smile

Some of them were mere sparklers whilst others were proper fireballs that burnt a lasting image on your retinas - it was superb.

Brill views of the stars and even the Milky Way... shame about the Galloway youth team turning up with their hazard lights on in the car park, their giddy laughter and screams at the sight of the sky lighting-up - twats. But that, along with a bit of a journey there and back, didn't spoil an otherwise highly pleasurable late night under the constellations.

Don't forget folks - keep looking up over the next few days and beyond!

If you've recently opened your exam results to discover you really should have spent less time hanging around the swings in the park drinking white lightning and more time swotting up for your highers to get into Uni; you're pretty screwed this year if the academic life was your dream!

8 of the country's learned institutions are full and won't take candidates through the last chance saloon, aka,'clearing'.

The doors are slammed shut at:

The University of Aberdeen
Glasgow Caledonian University
Heriot-Watt University
Queen Margaret University
The University of Strathclyde
The University of Glasgow
The University of Edinburgh
The University of St Andrews

It's a hard lesson learned, and in the current economic situation we find our country in, competition is even tougher out there than in the good times.

So, if you've not got the grades to get that dream place at Uni this year, what are the options?

Well, I guess you shouldn't give up all hope of getting a place on some under-subscribed course somewhere... check the UCAS website regularly for all the latest.

Maybe Uni isn't for you after all... how about college? Things are pretty packed in many of them too - so pick up the phone, check their websites and be prepared to go knock on doors.

Get a job - sometimes, you've just gotta roll up your sleeves and work your way up. Not easy in these financially troubled times, but what's to stop you going from burger flipper to restaurant owner in the space of a few years of hard graft?

Travel the world - work overseas and work your way around the world. Pick up some life experience and meet new friends.

Don't just sit around though... you've got to be in it, to win it!
