As a youngster I grew up watching the occasional Dr Who from behind the sofa as the Daleks and Cybermen terrorised the nation. Out from the tardis (there was a blue police box at a major junction close by my house in those days which brought the reality even closer) came doctors including John Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylverster McCoy. I didn't really understand then as a kid - I just got a thrill out of being scared, I guess; and after returning to watch the first part of the end of the tenth doctor, played by David Tennant, I have to say I still don't get it!
The manic laughter, screaming and long drawn-out scenes where nothing happens have compounded my view that it's just not Star Wars, is it!? I mean, at least with Star Wars you knew where you stood. You appreciated the struggle between good and evil, the sheer scale of the universe, the relevance of the family and support of friends, the wisdom of elders and the youthful adventure, and watched in awe the glorious battle scenes.
Yes, all in all, I have to admit to feeling that as much as I'd love to get into Dr Who, I find myself 'wanting', empty and slightly bored of the thin plots, hollow effects and undue hype. Now, where did I leave my lightsaber?
